Climate

Zanzibar experiences warm weather most of the year. December to March is hot and dry with sea temperatures averaging between 26-27 degrees Celsius. From June to October is the coolest and driest time of the year, but sea temperatures remain high and average 29 degrees Celsius. There are two rainy seasons, the heaviest period of rain is from March through to May and then a minor period of rain during October to November.

Clothing

Zanzibar’s population is predominantly Muslim, so important consideration to your choice of clothing is important and respectful. Conservative, non-transparent and loose fitting clothing with minimal exposure of your body should be worn at all times in the villages and stone town. Beach wear is accepted, but only on the beach. Topless or nude sunbathing is strictly prohibited everywhere on Zanzibar

Drinking water

Bottled mineral water recommended over tap water and is widely available in most shops on Zanzibar. Due to the hot weather in Zanzibar, it is recommended that you always travel with water to avoid dehydration.

Driving

Care should always be taken when you are on or around the roads on Zanzibar. If you are driving a vehicle, ensure that you have all the necessary licenses and permits and keep to the left side of the road. If you are walking along roads in Zanzibar take extra care, especially if you are on a road without a pedestrian pavement..

Electricity

Electrical sockets in Zanzibar are usually British type (3 pin square or round type). The supply is 220/240 volts 50 Hz. Please ensure that you have the correct electrical fittings on your appliances or an appropriate adaptor. If you are unsure about the electrical supply in your room or identify any faults, please notify the hotel reception.

Health

Malaria is endemic in Africa, so doctor prescribed prophylactics should be taken according to their instructions for you entire visit in Africa. Some wild and domestic animals may be infected with the Rabies virus. It is not recommended that you feed or touch any animals unless you are authorize by and certified guide. If you are bitten by any animal you should seek medical care as soon as possible. All hotels on Zanzibar have a doctor on call should you require any medical services. It is advised that you obtain travel insurance, including medical, before you arrive in Africa.

Insurance

Travel insurance that covers all of your intended activities and also unforeseen accidents and emergencies should be purchased before your visit to Africa. Remember that claims need to be settled locally on Zanzibar before you can reclaim charges incurred via your insurance provider.

Language

Swahili is the national language. Both English and Arabic are also widely spoken on Zanzibar.

Other Considerations

Public consumption of alcohol is not permitted outside licensed providers. Public drunkenness is not tolerated on Zanzibar. It is also important to be respectful of the conservative society on the Island; public displays of affection can be considered offensive. Please help to take of the environment on Zanzibar, do not litter and do not remove anything like coral, plants or animals from its natural environment.
